"As far as I'm concerned, my brother...was everything..."
—Eve to 2B and 9S

Eve is a major character and antagonist in NieR:Automata and NieR:Automata Ver1.1a. He is the younger twin brother of Adam.

Story[]

After defeating the newly born Adam in Chapter 03, 2B and 9S watch as Eve climbs out of Adam's puncture wounds. A naked and long-haired Eve then goes berserk, causing the surrounding terrain to collapse. 2B and 9S flee as Eve carries Adam in his arms and vanishes in the debris.

As the game progresses, Adam and Eve begin wearing clothes in order to emulate humans. However, unlike Adam, who later in the game starts wearing a white dress shirt, Eve chooses to remain topless.

"Why did you kill my brother?! I... I..!"
—Eve to 2B and 9S

Following his brother's defeat, Eve goes berserk and attacks 2B and 9S. After nearly being defeated, he uses the lifeforce of the remaining machine lifeforms connected to the network to continue his onslaught. 9S hacks into Eve to make an attempt at removing his object control function. During his time inside Eve, 9S is infected by his corruption but ultimately succeeds in incapacitating Eve.

Eve kneels before 2B in defeat, calling out to his brother one last time. 2B stabs him in the head, killing him.

According to the strategy guide, Eve's body was destroyed via laser by Pod 042 and Pod 153, under the former's orders.

"Listen to me Adam...I never disliked fighting. But I didn't want you to be hurt. And I especially didn't want to lose you. So let's go somewhere quiet. Together."
—Eve to Adam

Following his brother's defeat, Eve goes berserk and attacks 2B and 9S. After nearly being defeated, he uses the lifeforce of the remaining machine lifeforms connected to the network to continue his onslaught. 9S hacks into Eve to make an attempt at removing his object control function. During his time inside Eve, 9S is infected by his corruption but ultimately succeeds in incapacitating Eve.

When 9S reaches the end of Eve's labyrinth, he sees a giant house containing figments of Adam and Eve sitting across each other. Eve tells Adam that while he enjoyed fighting, he never wanted anything to happen to him.

According to the strategy guide, Eve's body was destroyed via laser by Pod 042 and Pod 153, under the former's orders.

meaningless [C]ode[]

As the tower is destroyed by A2, Eve is presumably destroyed along with it.

chil[D]hood's end[]

"Adam and Eve are inside the ark. Eve is asleep. Adam holds him in a gentle embrace. He seems to be smiling at me."
—9S in the Ark

As 9S is dying, he sees the Red Girls on the Ark, having decided to stop their plans of ending humanity.

Reformed consciousnesses of both Adam and Eve are also present on the Ark, free of any malice or hate towards Androids. Eve sleeps in Adam's embrace, and the latter invites 9S to join them (player dependent). They, along with the memories of the machine lifeforms, fire off in the Ark to explore new worlds.

the [E]nd of YoRHa[]

Depending on which Ending is achieved before Ending E (either C or D), Eve either wanders in space in the Ark with the other machine lifeforms in hopes of finding a new world, or is completely wiped out by A2.

While Eve's story mostly follows the game's events, he appears at the end of Adam's and 2B's fight at the Copied City and takes the death blow meant for Adam.

Personality[]

Eve is shown to be simple minded and childish, not liking having to think and questioning things he believes he doesn't have to do. Unlike Adam, who is intellectual and calm, Eve doesn't care about knowledge, instead being more interested in physical activities.

Eve also has a short temper, getting angry easily and being rather emotional. He deeply loves Adam and is very protective of him, thinking of him as his "everything." He does anything Adam says, even if it's something he's personally against.

In the light novel, it's revealed that Eve doesn't mind if Adam doesn't "play" with him, despite his outward dissappointment. The reason he suggests they "play" is because he knows that Adam is interested in humanity—and by "play" he's suggesting him an Adam do regular "human" activities.

Eve does not care about what he wants as long as Adam is fine with a decision or decides for him. When 9S hacks into Eve, it is revealed that the only thing Eve truly cares about is not losing Adam, and that he wants them to be able to relax in a quiet place together.

After Adam's death, Eve is overcome by grief and swears to kill everyone—his heightened emotions also causing the networked machines to go berserk. Before him, 2B, and 9S do battle, he is shown crying about the loss of his brother.

Gameplay[]

Route A[]

Eve is fought for the first time in Chapter 05. He attacks with kicks infused with golden energy and deploys shields and projectile barriers, which he follows up with powerful counterattacks. Eve can teleport around the battlefield and strike from behind, and is also capable of regenerating with full health if he is defeated before the dialogue finishes.

Eve is encountered again Chapter 10 as the final boss of Route A. This time he encases his arms in machine debris which he uses to attack the player. Once he levitates, the player must climb debris platforms to close the distance. During the final moments of the battle, close combat is disabled so he can only be attacked by Pod fire.

Route B[]

Eve is fought only once in this route as the final boss during Chapter 10. The fight is similar to Route A, although this time defeating him requires hacking into his system in order to disconnect him from the network. While hacking him, Eve frequently launches a burst of multiple balls of energy, not unlike that of a regular hacking mini game.

Intel Description[]

Chapter 03This unit has achieved an unusual level of evolution among machine lifeforms, as it possesses a strong resemblance to androids. It first appeared after splitting off from another machine.

Chapter 05Eve was again encountered in the alien mothership. He has the ability to regenerate no matter how many times he is killed, and adores the unit known as Adam—who he thinks of as an older brother.

Chapter 10After going mad with rage over the loss of Adam, Eve gained the ability to unleash powerful attacks with an arm clad in debris. Thanks to the desperate hacking work of 9S, he was eventually separated from the network and killed.

Quotes[]

Trivia[]

  • The tattoos that appear on Eve's body form the symbol of the Cult of the Watchers from Drakengard. The significance of this is unknown, however the Cult's founder, as well as the significance of the Cult's symbol, are both references to the biblical story of Adam and Eve.
  • Along with Adam, Anemone, and Commander White, Eve was designed by Yuya Nagai.
  • It is revealed in Route B that Eve needed a lot of convincing from Adam to wear clothing, so much so that Eve still refuses to wear a shirt and only dons black pants.
  • According to the NieR:Automata Guide Book, Eve's three sizes are 100 cm, 74 cm, and 94 cm. His height is 188 cm while his weight is 228.6 kg.
    • He shares the same measurements as his brother.
  • Eve shares his English voice actor, Ray Chase, with the older Nier in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139....
  • In NieR:Automata Ver1.1a Eve is the one who dies in the Copied City, not Adam as seen in NieR:Automata.
