Garden

The garden is an area next to Nier's house that plants can grow in NieR RepliCant and NieR Gestalt (NIER). In the first half of the game, planting space is unlocked by completing Shopping List and A Return to Shopping for the Florist in the Village. If these quests are missed, a Cultivator's Handbook can be bought from her for 5,000 Gold.

While the majority of crops serve no other purpose than to be sold, the garden is the only place where White Moonflowers can be cultivated; in which case, those aiming to earn the Legendary Gardener achievement will have to make use of the garden.

For the player to begin gardening, the aforementioned quests should be completed. The game does, however, provide the option to purchase the Cultivator's Handbook from the Village Florist to prevent being locked out of the garden. "Shopping List" unlocks the first row, where up to five plants can be cultivated, while "A Return to Shopping" unlocks an additional two rows, for a maximum of fifteen (15).

Cash crops such as Rice or Wheat will produce an abundant yield, which may be further maximized when applying Bounty Fertilizer onto the soil. Flowers, on the other hand, will only sprout one flower per one seed, although it will drop an additional number of seeds if Bounty Fertilizer is used as well.

All plants take 24 real-time hours to grow, and 48 hours to wilt. These growth and wilt times can be spoofed by adjusting the system clock on the player's platform of choice. Should the player wish to engage with the garden as normal, Speed and Flowering Fertilizers can also be used, which hasten or lengthen each plant's lifespan accordingly. Failing to obtain either the plant's produce or its seeds past the wilt time will cause it to disappear from the garden entirely, and the player will have to start all over again.

Plant seeds can either be purchased from select shops in the Village, Seafront, and Facade, or found in crates from the first two towns and at The Aerie before its destruction during the game's second half. Uniquely, several types of moonflower seeds can only be acquired via crossbreeding, which involves planting certain colors of seeds in a specific order.

Crossbreeding[]

Unmentioned anywhere in-game is a crossbreeding mechanic used to produce new colors of moonflower seeds—the process itself involves planting two set colors of seeds in an alternating fashion. Starting from the base Red, Gold, and Blue Moonflower Seeds available for purchase, four additional colors can be acquired. One of these colors are required for the Life in the Sands sidequest, where the client asks for Pink Moonflower Seeds in particular, while the Legendary Gardener achievement calls for White Moonflower Seeds to be cultivated.

Crossbreeding is entirely dependent on luck; it may take the player one day or several to obtain the color they seek. Bounty Fertilizer comes in handy when crossbreeding, for once the seeds of a new type of fertilized moonflower are harvested, the player may plant the new seeds in their possession to propagate batches of the new color.
