Yonah is a major character in NieR and its remake, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139....

Either Nier's sister or daughter, she is infected with the Black Scrawl and is the reason Nier goes on his journey to find the Sealed Verses.

She knows Nier works hard to provide for her, but there are times when she wishes he were home more often to keep her company. Despite being gravely ill, Yonah remains a courageous and exuberant girl who tries to lessen Nier's worrying, although her efforts often cause more trouble than help. Due to her frail health, she usually stays at home.

Story[]

Prologue[]

In the Summer of 2049 (Gestalt) or 2053 (Replicant), Yonah and Nier are seen hiding in a supermarket from strange monsters. Intending to try and help Nier fend them off, she touches a magical grimoire that causes an adverse reaction, called a relapse. Yonah's soul is suspended in this near-relapsed state, which is what causes her Replicant to always become afflicted with the Black Scrawl.

NieR[]

Over a thousand years later, Yonah and Nier live a quaint life in a small house in a remote village. Despite her illness and Nier's worrying, she often sneaks out to go to the nearby library.

After learning about a Lunar Tear—and its apparent ability to grant one wish to anyone who finds it—Yonah travels alone to the Lost Shrine to search for one. She is rescued by Nier and Grimoire Weiss, and after that is usually found bedridden at home.

At the end of Act I, Yonah is kidnapped and taken away by the Shadowlord, who's real identity is the original Nier seen in the game's prologue. After realizing that the original (Gestalt) Yonah's relapse can't be stopped, he abducted the Replicant Yonah in order to force Gestalt Yonah's soul to return to her Replicant body.

Five years later, Nier, Kainé, and Weiss reach the Shadowlord's chamber and, upon defeating Grimoire Noir, they discover the truth about the Shadowlord and Yonah—that they are the primary test subjects for Project Gestalt, and that the Shadowlord is simply driven by an identical desire to protect his family.

Gestalt Yonah wakes up in her Replicant body, but realizes she cannot keep it, as she hears Replicant Yonah inside her calling for her family. To the despair of the Shadowlord she vacates the body, and him and Nier do battle. After Nier's victory, he is able to call the Replicant Yonah back and they are reunited—however without their Gestalts, and Project Gestalt being destroyed with the death of the Shadowlord, all Replicants are inevitably doomed to extinction.

Endings[]

Ending A: Call Her Back[]

Nier hesitates before killing the Shadowlord, but ultimately deals a fatal blow. He then rushes to Yonah's side, worried when she doesn't respond to his calls. An incorporeal Weiss uses the last bit of his strength to speak, telling Nier that she will awaken when someone says the name of the one she loves most. The player is then given a choice to write their character's name, and if entered correctly, Yonah slowly opens her eyes and they are reunited after five years.

Kainé moves to leave, but is stopped by Nier, who asks if she wants to stay with them. She declines, stating she has "her own shit to take care of." The scene shifts to Nier and a young Yonah back at the village, sitting on the hill near their house. Yonah gives Nier a Lunar Tear as they both lay down, looking at the sky. The scene shifts again, showing an older Yonah and the Shadowlord about to take each other's hands, with Yonah instead hugging the Shadowlord's arm—hinting that their Gestalts have also reunited.

Ending B: Lingering Memories[]

After Nier defeats the Shadowlord, the scene changes to Gestalt Nier scrunched up, weeping to himself alone in a white void as he regrets all the hardships he put Yonah through. A flashback occurs, with Yonah and himself alone in the supermarket. Yonah tries to force him to eat something, but he tells her that he isn't hungry.

The scene reverts back, and images of enemies that Replicant Nier previously killed gaze at him while he cries to himself. Gestalt Yonah in her young form comes to greet him, thanking him for always being there with her, and she warmly offers him a cookie.

Ending C: Thank You[]

After Nier defeats the Shadowlord, as Kainé leaves she begins to relapse. Her Gestalt goes berserk, which forces Nier to fight her. After Kainé is incapacitated, the Shade inside her body, Tyrann, explains to Nier how he can save her—either by killing her to set her free, or forgoing his entire existence for her.

If the player chooses to kill Kainé, Nier stabs her as he kisses her, finally ending her pain. Tyrann tells Nier Kainé's last words, "Thank you." A lunar tear falls next to a distraught Nier, who then picks it up as he gazes through a window, stating that they will always be together.

Yonah is not present in this ending, but it's assumed Nier and Yonah return home to live out the rest of their lives.

Ending D: Something Very Special[]

If the player chooses to sacrifice Nier's entire existence for Kainé, the player's data is erased and everyone forgets he ever existed.

Nier disappears, and Yonah thanks Kainé for saving her. A lunar tear falls on the ground, which Kainé picks up. When she holds it, she has a flashback of Nier and mentions that it feels like she found something special.

Ending E: The Lost World (e8a898e686b6e382b5e383bce38390e383bc)[]

Note: Yonah is not present in this ending.

Three years after the events of Ending D, Kainé wakes from a recurring nightmare. Frustrated, she heads to the Forest of Myth to find the Replicants there slaughtered, and strange machines exiting the Divine Tree.

Heading deeper inside, Kainé encounters a pair of humanoid machines that identify themselves as the Administrators. She moves to attack them, and is met with mechanized copies of herself that almost overwhelm her, but Emil arrives and turns the tide in their favor.

Past the array of machinery, Kainé and Emil stumble upon a wholly white expanse, featuring a cityscape much like the old world as well as facsimiles of the atrium and chamber at the Shadowlord's Castle. She fends off an assault from a black cube, with her final blow somehow sending her inside its cyberspace.

From there, the Administrators' attack on Kainé continues. They turn her memories against her, culminating in a rematch with Hook. On the verge of defeat, Grimoire Weiss is made manifest, and together they take down the Shade one last time. The surge of power from the battle overwhelms the Administrators and the surrounding area, causing a colossal white flower to bloom over the landscape—with Kainé, Emil, and a reconstructed Nier reuniting at its center.

Development[]

In an interview with Get News, Yoko Taro stated that Yonah's name drew inspiration from the Book of Jonah and the heroine in Mariko Ōhara's novel, Hybrid Child (the novel that inspired him to become a game director).[1][2] The English styling of her name was done to avoid "an old man image." In the same interview, Yoko says her diary entries were written by a female employee of the company.

One of producer Yosuke Saito's personal requests was to have a happy ending where Yonah holds Nier's hand. Yoko feels he granted it, yet commented, "but what happens after that is a different story." This is backed up by supplementary material and interviews which reveal that Yonah's illness will never be cured.[3]

According to their production notes, character designer D.K struggles to draw younger girls like Yonah. Teenage Yonah is D.K's favorite character. Yonah's older design was made so that her clothes wouldn't change much from before and that they'd be easy to sleep in.

Other Appearances[]

SINoALICE[]

It is implied during the NieR RepliCant × SINoALICE collaboration that Yonah eventually turns into a Shade sometime after the events of NieR. Her brother is unable to accept her existence, and his failure to protect her, killing her in a mad rage. Her death causes Nier to swiftly regress into the Shadowlord.

Her Shade form attacks the player with magical abilities—either attacking groups or individuals with a wave of shadowy energy. During her final phase, she gives debuffs by flapping her wings and becomes more aggressive. Physical attacks are her primary weakness.

"Girl" is the mute Shade resembling her and can be earned as a Nightmare from the event's shooting gacha. When she is summoned in battle, she boosts the player characters' magic attack power in the Story and Colosseum.

During the game's Nier Replicant collaboration revival, players could obtain "Favorite Caldron," the tome that unlocks Yonah/Sorcerer, through the collaboration gacha with a payment of 150 or 300 crystals. Alternatively, Replicant Medals (Revival) could be exchanged for individual exchange rates (1,500 for the job or weapon only).

The "Favorite Caldron" weapon story is Yonah narrating about a recipe that supposedly heals any injuries, and is often given to someone's dearest loved one. Plenty of ingredients are added, including a scorpion's claw, leading to its bizarre blue tint. After it's covered and boiled, she looks forward to feeding the finished stew to her brother.

Yonah's job story isn't clear on its exact setting. She is lost, scared, and alone in a place of nothingness. After some time passes, she becomes aware of someone else's lonely presence beside her. They gently pat her head, calming Yonah. Hearing someone's voice calling her, she then feels she "must go." Yonah apologizes to her brother, her last words being that she loves him.
